Convenient Access from China
One state road carries you most of the way from the head of the lake to our front door. Kennebec Dental Excellence sits on Benton Ave in Winslow, roughly 15 minutes from China Village along Route 137, with two general dentists and a full range of care under one roof. Households looking for a dentist in China, ME who can handle cleanings, gum care, crowns and nervous patients in the same building can make the trip without a single highway on-ramp.
The drive starts at the China Village Post Office, 19 Main Street, near the top of the lake. Go north on Main Street for a moment, then turn left onto Waterville Road, which is Route 137. Keep heading northwest as the road changes its name to China Road and crosses the town line into Winslow. Where it ends, turn right onto Bay Street (US 201), which runs straight into Benton Avenue.
From there it is a short stretch north past the Winslow Town Office and Winslow Elementary School. Our office at 464 Benton Ave, Winslow, ME 04901 is on the left, a little beyond Charles Ave. Door to door the trip covers about 9.1 miles, and our Google Maps pin shows the final turn. Families in Vassalboro and Albion have pages with their own directions.
A Lake Town of Five Villages
China is spread across five villages, from the historic one at the head of the lake to South China, Weeks Mills and Branch Mills. Roughly 4,400 people call the town home, and water covers about seven of its fifty-seven square miles. Besides the main lake, Three Mile Pond and Branch Pond sit within the town limits, all in Kennebec County.
The north-end village grew up at the head of the lake on stream power and later became a stagecoach stop. Most of the village is now a historic district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and about three quarters of its buildings went up before 1850 in Federal or Greek Revival style. The Albert Church Brown Memorial Library on Main Street is free to everyone in the area.
The town itself took its name in 1818 from a favorite hymn tune, chosen by a local resident. Today the Town of China runs its office from the village of South China. Out in the northeast corner, town-owned Thurston Park offers more than five miles of trails past small waterfalls and old cellar holes.
Lake life sets the pace for a lot of households. The lake's eastern basin lies entirely inside the town, and its shoreline mixes year-round homes with seasonal cottages. The town's neighbors include Vassalboro, Palermo and Windsor.
Prevention First for China Families
Younger children here attend the primary and middle schools on Lakeview Drive, part of Regional School Unit 18. High schoolers choose among schools in Winslow, Waterville, Augusta and Oakland, and Erskine Academy, a private high school, is in the southern part of town. Either way, some families already head toward Winslow on school mornings.
That makes it easier to keep checkups on the calendar, and checkups are where most dental savings happen. Plaque that hardens into tartar can only come off with a professional cleaning, and the exam that goes with it spots small cavities long before they ache. Our preventive dental cleanings are gentle enough for young children and thorough enough for adults who have skipped a year or two.
Gum health deserves equal attention. Bleeding when you floss, a sour taste or gums pulling back from the teeth can signal early gum disease, which often causes no pain at first. Caught early, it responds well to a deeper cleaning and closer follow-up, and patients with a diagnosis can join our Perio Membership Plan for three periodontal cleanings a year at $58 a month.
Teenagers bring a different list. Wisdom teeth start to crowd in during the late teens, and both of our dentists remove them in the office, impacted ones included. Students in contact sports do better with a custom athletic mouthguard, which stays in place far better than a store-bought one. A checkup before the school year starts is a good moment to cover both.
Some adults avoid the dentist because past visits were hard. Complimentary mild oral sedation is available at no charge, with vital signs monitored throughout, as long as someone else drives you home. That option can help nervous patients finally get back on a regular schedule.
Every Age, One Office: Choosing a Dentist in China, ME
Preventive Dentistry
Exams, cleanings and digital x-rays are the routine that keeps everything else smaller. Children's visits can add fluoride varnish and sealants on new molars.
Gum Disease Treatment
Periodontal care cleans below the gumline to calm infection and protect the bone around your teeth. Regular follow-up visits keep it from coming back.
Sedation Dentistry
Mild oral sedation helps anxious patients relax through cleanings or longer treatment. Dr. Bue is trained in mild sedation, and the option costs nothing extra.
Restorative Dentistry
Tooth-colored fillings, crowns and bridges repair damage once it happens. A CEREC same-day crown is milled in the office, so many patients finish a crown in one visit.
Cosmetic Dentistry
Whitening and veneers can freshen a smile that coffee, tea or time has dulled. Our dentists match shade and shape to your natural teeth.
Meet Your Winslow Dentists
Dr. Jeff Bue grew up in Alaska and moved to Maine in 2020, and he spends his time off backpacking and winter camping. In the office he is valued for a calm approach with anxious patients and training in mild sedation. His colleague, Dr. James Guilbault, DMD, trained at the University of Montreal and brings interests in endodontics, TMJ care and full-mouth rehabilitation.
Insurance, Membership & Financing
The whole family can join our Membership Plan: $36 a month for adults 14 and older and $31 for children 13 and younger, with no waiting periods and no annual maximum. If you have coverage, we accept most major insurers, including MetLife, Humana and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Cherry and Proceed Finance can spread out the cost of larger care.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Kennebec Dental Excellence from China, and how do I get there?
The drive from the China Village Post Office is about 9.1 miles and usually takes around 15 minutes. You follow Route 137, first as Waterville Road and then as China Road, into Winslow, turn right on Bay Street and continue onto Benton Avenue. Anyone searching for a dentist in China, ME will see our office on the left.
Does my child need checkups if they have never had a cavity?
Yes. Checkups are how children stay cavity-free, not just how cavities get found. Each visit removes plaque buildup, checks how new teeth are coming in and gives a chance for fluoride varnish or sealants on new molars. A child with healthy teeth usually has the quickest, easiest appointments, which helps them stay comfortable at the dentist as they grow.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar above and just under the gumline on healthy gums. A deep cleaning goes further below the gums to clear bacteria from the root surfaces when gum disease has formed pockets. It takes longer than a routine visit, and follow-up cleanings afterward help keep those pockets from coming back.
Is it okay to wait on a filling if the tooth doesn't hurt yet?
It is better not to wait. Cavities rarely hurt until they are fairly deep, and by then a small filling can turn into a crown or a root canal. Treating decay while it is still small usually means a quicker visit, less drilling and a lower bill, so the best time to fill it is when the exam first finds it.
How long is the drive if I live near South China instead?
From the China Town Office in South China, plan on about 22 minutes for the 13.4-mile drive. That is roughly seven minutes more than starting at the post office at the north end of the lake. For an 8:00 AM appointment, leaving home around 7:30 AM leaves time to arrive and check in without rushing.
